Music students apply for admission to the School through one of two different strands that are based upon the level of interest and competency in Music of the applicant. Students who enrol under General Enrolment have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through the music program. Students who have prior learning of a music instrument may apply for admission as a General Entry Student (Curriculum Claim - Music) - Year 7, and /or Music Placement Student - Years 8 to 12
Many students who do not live locally or do not have a sibling enrolled at the School seek a place on the grounds that they have been learning a music instrument and that they wish to continue their musical studies as a participant in the Instrumental Music Program of The University High School. These students typically show that their local schools do not provide a music program that will meet their specific learning needs. Students admitted under this entry criterion are only offered a place when there are vacancies at the appropriate year level after all local applicants and sibling claims have been processed. Students seeking general entry on the grounds of having prior learning of a music instrument must provide evidence, with their The University High School Supplimentary Application Form, of their prior learning of a music instrument. Typically students present certified copies of A.M.E.B reports and/or statements from their instrumental music teachers. The successful applicants for general entry would normally have achieved a recognized standard or equivalent standard for the practical A.M.E.B assessment or equivalent in their chosen instrument. The entry level varies from year to year and is dependent upon the standard and the range of instrument of applicants. For details of the “general entry” application to The University High School, please contact the school office during business hours.
Students seeking a Music Placement Vacancy must have a strong background of learning in at least one musical instrument and wish to pursue serious studies of music to the end of the VCE years. Places are awarded on curriculum grounds. A limited number of Music Places for musically talented students may be available for students entering Years 8 - 12 2010. Students of the following instruments may apply (for 2010): flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, tuba, french horn, violin, viola, cello, double bass, voice (classical), guitar (classical), orchestral percussion, or piano. Please note that contemporary electric instruments such as guitar, bass guitar and drum kit are not catered for in the instrumental music program. Students interested in perusing VCE studies in these instruments should make enquiries through the schools' cluster VET Music program. Successful Music Placement Students gain entry by presenting for audition and providing evidence of satisfactory academic progress. Successful Music Placement Students are required to participate fully in the program of the School and in addition meet the following undertakings: 1. That the students will take all elective classroom music subjects for at least their first two years at The University High School. 2. That the students will be required to take part in extra musical activities such as orchestral, band, chamber and choral music rehearsals, performances and excursions.
