UHS has
a very effective Student Representative Council. It is based on the
democratic principles of representation, accountability and participation.
All students are encouraged to take an interest in the SRC by running
for office or contacting their representative to take up an issue at
an SRC meeting. The SRC is elected on Australian Electoral Commission
guidelines by calling for nominations and conducting a secret ballot.
Students are encouraged to stand for office and be held ccountable for
their actions. The SRC gives students an opportunity to participate
in decision making, act as mentors for other students and to work as
a team to solve problems. AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL UHS has had a strong commitment to the awareness of human rights issues and each year undertakes fundraising activities for Amnesty International. This is a great way for members of the school community to learn more about ways to defend and encourage human rights on a global perspective. Candle Day now takes place in May each year. AI is an independent world wide organisation that operates outside the confines of governments.

Every year
Student Forums are held on a topical subject. These forums are usually
a joint venture between Student Leadership Initiatives and Political
Studies. In the past Student Forums have been held on The Coalition
of the Willing in Iraq, the 2004 Federal Election, an afternoon with
Jenny Macklin, Deputy Leader of the Federal Opposition, Responses to
Terrorism and the role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. ROTARY UHS is
proud to be associated with local Rotary branches who have sponsored
a number of external programs for our students over many years. These
activities have included a Mini-United Nations Assembly at a rural retreat
and trips to Canberra where the students stay with Rotary families and
learn more about the political and legal framework of Australia. They
are generally available to students in Years10 & 11 each year. |

The student newspaper, Post Ubiqué, is generally published once or twice a term and provides a print outlet for those students with something to say - and, on occasions, some who haven't had much to say at all!

We don't really do dogwalking as an official extracurricular activity (though I believe some staff and students do engage in this activity from time to time). That means that this space is available (along with others that can be created) for anyone within the school community who would like to promote a more "official" activity to the world out there. Just contact the webmaster with all the necessary details.

This dynamic
student initiative aims to involve as many students and members of the
community in raising awareness of a worthwhile cause. SMAD meets regularly
to plan a major initiative once a term. Members undertake particular
activities such as a fairy floss day to raise funds for a program such
as the Merri Creek, Youth Crisis Centres and the International Women's
Development Agency. SMAD aims to demonstrate that young people do care
about the world and that they can make a difference by getting together
to offer solutions to a challenging world. FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES Students and teachers frequently pursue a fundraising activity as an extension of an area of study in the classroom. Some of these ventures include AIDS in Africa studied in International Studies and Tsunami awareness studied in Geography. Sometimes these fundraising activities have a more local basis such as the Year 11 and 12 Formals. These fundraising activities give all students the opportunity to be involved in decision making, working as a team, financial planning and being responsible for taking the initiative to solve a problem. These fundraising activities are independent of SMAD and often emerge from an individual class in response to a crisis. YOUTH IN PHILANTHROPY PROGRAM UHS was part of the pilot program where six students worked with a mentor associated with the Melbourne City Council and its Lord Mayor's Charitable Fund. It is now an annual event. The students assess applications, visit charities and then make and justify decisions about the allocation of funds. This is an outstanding opportunity to be involved with social justice initiatives at the local level and to develop skills for life. This program is a commitment of one day a month for around six months and is a challenging and rewarding experience. It is available to students in Years 10 & 11.
